The recent Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) controversy where the vice chancellor of the university, is being criticized for his decision to ban girl students from the varsity's library; has taken many prominent members of the society by surprise.

The varsity also faced rage when they decided to ban The Times of India (TOI) newspaper from its departments and offices describing it as 'intolerant and undemocratic' paper. Where many educationalists and scholars expressed their agitation over the VC's comment on girls and the TOI ban; actors are also expressing their displeasure over the issue. Famous bollywood and Marathi film actress Sonali Kulkarni also shared her displeasure on the overall controversy. The actress said, "In a country where people have struggled so hard to obtain these rights (education for girls), university authorities should not restrict any one gender from a place like library. There is some insecurity deep down from where these decisions (to ban TOI) are coming from."
